A Fractional Founding Marketer to build and operate your first marketing function

Senior, hands-on marketing ownership for seed and early Series A startups with traction. I build the function across positioning, GTM, demand, systems and measurement, then keep it running lean as the company grows.

Direct answer

What does a Fractional Founding Marketer actually do?

A Fractional Founding Marketer builds and runs a startup's first marketing function on a part-time, embedded basis, typically one to four days a week. Unlike an agency or a junior hire, the same person owns positioning, channels, systems and execution end to end, so the company gets a working marketing system instead of scattered activity.

What gets built

What I build with you

There is no universal startup marketing checklist. What gets built depends on the product, market, ACV, sales motion, customers, existing team and what is already working.

The underlying system usually needs the following seven layers. Each summary expands to the full scope.

  1. 01

    Customer, ICP & market understanding

Turn customer evidence and market signals into sharper decisions about who marketing is actually for.Read moreShow less

I use existing customer evidence, interviews, sales insight and market research to clarify who buys, why they buy, which signals point to stronger fit, who should not be prioritized and where the biggest uncertainties remain.

  2. 02

    Positioning & messaging

Translate what customers value into a positioning and messaging system the company can actually use.Read moreShow less

That means category and competitive context, customer problem, value proposition, proof, objections, messaging hierarchy and language that can be tested in real channels.

  3. 03

    Content, proof & sales enablement

Turn customer and market understanding into reusable assets that support demand and sales.Read moreShow less

Positioning only becomes useful when it reaches the market and helps real conversations move forward. Depending on the business, I personally build or direct website copy, case studies, founder and company content, sales decks, one-pagers, launch material, email sequences and objection-handling assets.

  4. 04

    GTM priorities

Decide what matters now, and what should explicitly not be done yet.Read moreShow less

Early-stage teams cannot execute every plausible growth idea. A major part of the work is deciding: what matters now? Which assumptions need evidence? Which customer segments deserve focus? Which channels are worth testing? What should explicitly not be done yet? Prioritization is part of the deliverable.

  5. 05

    Demand generation & channel experiments

Turn the strongest market signals into repeatable acquisition.Read moreShow less

Once the fundamentals are strong enough, hypotheses need to meet the market. Depending on the business, that can mean content, SEO, outbound, paid acquisition, partnerships, community or other channels, each tested for useful signal before more time and budget go into it.

  6. 06

    MarTech, CRM & measurement

Build the minimum useful infrastructure to understand what is actually happening.Read moreShow less

Marketing cannot become systematic if every decision is based on anecdotes. That means CRM, lead capture, analytics, attribution, campaign tracking, dashboards, reporting, and automation where it genuinely removes manual work. The business requirement comes first. The tool comes second.

  7. 07

    Marketing operations & documentation

Make marketing progressively less dependent on memory and improvisation.Read moreShow less

Tools and campaigns are not enough to make marketing run. It needs an operating rhythm: priorities, reporting, experiment tracking, documentation, decision rationale, reusable workflows and clear ownership of recurring work.

Investment

Investment

This is senior embedded marketing ownership, priced by capacity.

Two days a week is senior time for the decisions and the highest-leverage work, not a promise to build the entire function in two days.

If the company mainly needs isolated execution or a few hours of advice each month, this is probably not the right model.

Typical starting point

€5,500/mo

Around two days a week.

Capacity scales from one to four days a week depending on the mandate. Fee is quoted per mandate, book a call for a number tailored to your scope.

Commitment

  • 3 months minimum
  • Most mandates run around 2 years

Does the fee change over the engagement?

It is set at the mandate's capacity and reviewed if the scope changes, for example moving from two to three days a week.

What happens after the three-month minimum?

Most mandates continue on a rolling monthly basis. Some later shift to an advisory retainer as an internal hire takes over.

Fit

Fit

Good fit if

  • There is credible traction
  • The marketing function is underbuilt
  • Leadership wants a senior owner close to execution
  • The company can support a serious ongoing engagement

Probably not yet if

  • The core uncertainty is still product-market fit
  • The need is a narrow production task
  • Leadership is not ready to transfer meaningful ownership

We hired Justine to support marketing and digital efforts for our start up organization. What I could not have expected is that she would completely transform the way we operate. Justine possesses an impressive combination of a strategic mindset and incredibly detailed execution. She's highly analytical, hyper organized and wonderfully creative. She's also scrupulously fair and thoughtful, which stands out as being exceptional for a contractor. Any organization would be lucky to have her keen eye and deep well of experience at their disposal. I know we are!

It’s rare that you come across standout talent like Justine. ‘Ridiculously efficient’ is the phrase that comes to my mind when I think about our work together. Justine expertly filled the role of social media strategist for my digital team. I had the pleasure of working with Justine for 1,5 year, collaborating on several projects. Her ability to juggle multiple projects is impressive as is her solid work ethic. She is a dedicated, forward-thinking with a strong hand-on mentality. And ofcourse her enthusiasm is a true asset to the team. As a team member or a manager, Justine earns my highest recommendation. Any company will be lucky to have her!
